I can confess that we haven't bought the Tele in years, not since they did an appalling piece about the personal life of one of my friends. He has a messy marital thing and for some odd reason, it was given front page.
My mother still buys it however.
I reckon that things in Crawfurd Street are not going well but if they this will increase their revenues, they're daft, but then we know they are. They have certainly not been happy with the way their shitty site has been taken over by informed and lively debate and I gather the Labour Party have not been too happy.
I just wonder who they think they are, why in the name of all that's holy do they think ANYONE would think of paying them £4 a month to read shite about some arsehole cycling to Mount Fuji in aid of their granda's varicose veins.
Anyway, good riddance to utter shite.

but what will we talk about?
Seriously, some thought will need to be given as to how we procure local news stories for discussion. A good wee site as it is, I wouldn't want to rely wholly on Inverclyde Now.
Do you think Jeremy will develop the current site and go fully commercial, employing real journalists or do you think an area the size of Inverclyde would warrant a reduced print run paper, something similar to The Largs & Millport?

I've heard about stifling debate but this is bloody ridiculous, expecting people to pay for the pleasure of taking part in the online section only to find your views being moderated.
As Winston say's we'll have to start looking elsewhere for stories which is going to be a pain in the ass. But we'll muddle through.

if we cant find any then we make our own up..... hey if you get moderated do you get your money back?

My family used to get it, but to be honest if you don't socialise at night in the town do you really need to know the movements of every petty criminal in the district? Or all the hatches, matches and dispatches? I'll not be paying anything to read it. Inverclyde Now here I come. I don't feel bad about that. There are loads of free online news providers. Edit] I am liking Tom Stevenson's blog in Inverclyde Now. The bit about Hector McNeil was superb.

You're right there Linda. They could do a lot worse than shake of their political allegiances and employ at least one real investigative journalist who would get their teeth into some of the real news stories that affect people across the area.

Whilst on a routine patrol to the towns esplanade constable Ivor Biggun of the Greenock Constabulary saw a certain Mr C Gull defecating on the promenade. On spying the constable Gull took off, but was later apprehended by PC Bigun.
At the towns magistrates court, Gull was fined 2/6p. At that moment the most unpleasant of noises ensued from the rafters as Gulls' family decided to defecate on mass within the building.
At this point Sgt Hawk flew in to the melee and sent the gulls diving for cover as he flew from one to the other bring them down one by one.

I reckon things are a bit dodgy with the parent company. There has to be a drop in profits across the board the way things are and some idiot thinks this is a way to raise revenue. I really can't think why anyone would pay these arseholes £4 per month to read a Labour Party pamphlet. It'll die a death by end of business today.
The only folk who might take them up on it are ex-pats but even they will see that they are getting bugger all for their money.
I did notice a while back that many of this company's other titles do not have comments sections despite them using the same template. Rod, you are right of course, no business these days will dream of handing money over to advertise on a site that nobody looks at. At the height of the, 'comment boom' the number of hits must have been staggering.
I suppose for now we will have to use Bro Burrows' site and hopefully he will see that our links will bring him lots of hits too. I cannot see him being daft enough to do the same as the Tele.
I won't miss the Tele at all.

Greetings and Salutations to you all ! As someone who moved away from Inverclyde over 20 years ago, I used the Tele s(h)ite to catch up on what was going on. A typical days 'news cover' went a long way to remind me of why I would never move back (I'm not trying to be insulting or patronising - apologies to you all if I appear to be). The stories were / are generally bleak and paint a picture of 'small town attitudes' verging on the parochial. The level of journalistic incompetence is obvious. A typical report would be of the format :
A house was broken into in the early hours of Saturday in Gourock. It is understood that the thieves broke in between 01.00 a.m. and 06.00 a.m. Their haul included a 3 figure sum of cash and jewellery of great sentimental value to the property owner. Greenock Constabulary's PC Ivor Biggun was quoted as saying,
'Somewhere between the hours of 01.00 a.m. and 06.00 a.m on Saturday morning a house was broken into in Gourock. We understand that they stole a 3 figure sum of cash and jewellery of great sentimental value to the property owner.'
Lazy journalism at best but more than likely the tele owners pay peanuts and get Monkeys. When I visit Mater and Pater, I get the opportunity to read the hard copy version of the paper. I find it incredible that the owners have the cheek to charge 40p [sic] for 4 pages of tosh....it'd make a cat laugh !! I certainly won't miss it - and I agree with the comments above re the loss of revenue when local firms withdraw their adverts.
Toodle Pip !!

I did laugh there when I went to the Tele site for the first time in a couple of days and realised that they wanted me to actually pay to view it. Now, i've not bought the actual Telegraph in *years* because it is so terrible, so there is absolutely no way in hell I would ever consider paying money to access their website! The only reason I ever went on their site to begin with was to have a laugh at their dreadful, hopeless, labour-biased 'articles' being ripped to shreds by some of you guys every time. I can now happily remove the Greenock Telegraph link from my bookmarks, no need to go near the site again now
