Thanks for these[.pdf copies].
I have been in contact with **********, and am investigating what might have caused this problem. From our records we have found two machines that have accessed her account in this way that do not belong to her. I've reset the system for logging in and so you shouldn't experience this again.
If you experience any further issues, please don't hesitate to get in touch. And please accept my apologies for the inconvenience and hassle this issue has caused you.
Regards,
HughThis was today's reply from the Tele. As most of you know, I have very little IT skills but does that remark about "town machines accessing her account" not sound vaguely accusatory? I would make one comment to you all, if any of you are thinking of registering with them for the, 'pay per view' service, think again, their system is far from secure!!!!

Methinks Shug speaks with pish tongue............ If they know that 2 unauthorised machines were used, they know the IP addresses of these machines too ( at the time of access) You don't have to be sherlock holmes, not even one of Strathclyde's finest to follow the trail and come up with a possible answer When you're clueless, it's much easier to obsfucate

Should I reply to this budding Einstein or just leave it? You could ask him what they are doing about the 2 rogue machines who accessed the account - after all it is illegal, perhaps even mention getting the police's IT security folk involved That should put the wind up him

I want to know how he knows its 2 different machines, that cannot be known from the IP address but only from the MAC address
As Sam says, he's talking through a hole in his arse

He would need to tell you how he knows its 2 different PC's TBH, 2 people having the same IP does not necessarily indicate they are using the same machine. For example, most ISP's use whats know as DHCP, when you connect your router it gets an IP from the provider, depending on the provider they may give you a static IP (always stays the same) or a dynamic IP, which changes frequently. The other reason may be that the ISP use a proxy server, this is more common in compaines than ISP's but some ISP's still use them, AOL being one.

My son just checked ours and apparently we are in Sanquar.
Would I be right in thinking that the bottom line here is that they simply are feckless and shouldn't be trusted with people's personal details?

LOL I would dearly love to make a big public thing about it but I don't think selkie would approve. I would however like to take the shine off their much vaunted, 'premium' online services.

Now Hugh, I am concerned to find that two unauthorised machines have accessed ********** account. Do you not think that on the day you switched to a pay per view model such a breach of security is a serious subject for concern? And whilst we are discussing *********** account, we seem to be forgetting about mine. Where did my account go during this fiasco, was it accessed by others? How many other account holders have been similarly affected. I ask these questions because as I look at your various answers and replies, your assessment of events changes by turns. Such is my anxiety over this issue, I am giving consideration to reporting the matter to Strathclyde Police who I am told have a department set up for just this sort of thing. A number of us, it may surprise you and your superiors to know, were going to join your, 'premium' service but in the light of yesterday and possibly today's events, we do not feel that your systems are sufficiently robust or secure to handle sensitive, financial information. -- Tiddles

Well, he has now given me four different versions. It really is very serious, all joking aside. Poor little Hugh will probably be some wee tweek they are paying minimum wage + 10%. It's the sort of thing you'd go to the Tele about Hopefully someone will pass it about Facebook or Twitter.

he's trying the old "smoke and mirrors", next they'll be trying to amend the database logs, which no doubt they'll make an arse of as well and it'll be clear to anyone with half a brain that they've tried to change it

It really is a two-bit operation but one that might have had access to a lot of big time private info.

If any of you are on Twitter or Facebook, please pass this sorry tale on. The more people who know of how appalling the Tele's security is, the fewer people will sign up.
