So, the Tele reports that Health Chiefs are to create an area for smokers at IRH to stop them smoking outside the front door.
Now, as an ex smoker, I can appreciate that some people can't go without a fix. But for heavens sake why do they let people smoke outside the door? Are the 'No Smoking' signs invisible to these people?
It's a frigging hospital, I don't want to have to walk through a cloud of smoke when I going in there to improve my health (hopefully).
Why don't these health chiefs grow a pair and enforce the instruction on the sign?
I do notice that it is the patients sitting in wheel chairs, often with a limb missing, that are often the smokers.
Where I come from doon south in sunny Inglandshire, the local hospital enforces a strict no smoking policy across the whole hospital grounds and it is followed. Why can't IRH do the same?

half of the ones smoking outside are staff, the hospital grounds are a sight they have bushes round car park that are full of litter and there is fag ends allover the place. and when you are in the place and look out windows at back all you see is derelict burnt out houses

when i worked there i had to laugh as the doctor's that were telling the patients that they had to give up smoking were the very ones that were having a wee puff

They have the power to remove anyone smoking from the premises (that includes the grounds) the fact that they choose not to enforce it is entirely up to them. They are under no legal responsibility to provide smoking shelters
I used tae work at North Lanarkshire Health - there the security guards prowled the grounds kicking people out Staff were not allowed to smoke even their car if it was in car park, it was a disciplinary for them if caught

What amazes me is that cigarettes are a legal substance and yet drug addicts and alcoholics do more damage than smokers. I used to be a smoker but still I feel it for the smokers, they really have the rough end of addiction.

Why have rules if they are not inforced, remember the fuss about smoking on the buses? People will get uses to it, but they have to get security to point it out to people and they will soon get the message, some of them will barely move out your road to let you past them.

Perhaps its time to say If you want to be a patient in here - you cannot smoke whatsoever - if you want to smoke fuck off and don't darken our door until you've stopped.

Maybe the issue is that there are no security type staff to enforce the rules. Or maybe there are and I've never seen them.
Probably cheaper to employ someone to do this than build a smoking shelter and maintain it.

Who's going to move them, staff? not a chance, and quite rightly so. A porter at GHC was harassed for weeks by some junkie just because he told him there was "No smoking" in the grounds of GHC.

I thought smoking at the IRH was banned from all hospital grounds? I been told by someone who works there that staff have been told they have to go outside the car park entrance to have a fag.

The entrance to IRH is a disgrace. All those arseholes sitting their in wheelchairs amongst all that filth and then they go back up to the wards. What is the matter with the nursing staff? Do the ward sisters thin it is alright for their patients to wander about the front of the hospital picking up all sorts of infections?
The bottom line is, if you go into hospital, you CANNOT smoke. No ands, ifs or buts. If that doesn't suit you, stay home and die. As to visitors, can't they keep off it even for just an hour or two?
People used to tell me that the, 'enjoyed a smoke', but most people, if you gave them a magic wand would wave it to be able to stop.
NHSGG&C has to deal with this. Instead of employing simpletons to police their car parks, why don't they police the hospital grounds. If anyone, staff, patient or visitor is found smoking, sack the staff member, send the patient home and throw the visitor off the site. Sure it'll cost money but it would nothing compared to the costs involved in dealing with the effects on people's health both actively and passively.

At Cleland Hospital in North Lanarkshire, the staff as they were not allowed to smoke on site, or in their cars on site either, used to drive outside and onto the street or the nearby railways station car park, have a smoke then drive back in again
Two imbeciles I had working for me at the time lit up before getting outside the gate, a senior manager spotted them and went ballistic, it went as high as the director of IT. She explained to me later , that she smoked but had to leave the premises before lighting up, she also told me that if you were travelling between sites in yer ain car but on company time you weren't allowed to smoke either

IM a smoker, and I have been trying to give up for the last 2 or so years. What really pisses me off is if the staff that moan about us going for a fag break, seeing as I go for a smoke I dont have a tea break, but the staff who complain take 50 min teabreaks and shit, and then complain that Im out for all of 3 fucking minutes for a smoke.

It may sound harsh, but I now don't hire folk who smoke - can't be arsed with the hassle I don't hire folk who can't work weekends or unsocial hours either People who smoke who do work for me, know the score, I'll support them to give it up - but no smoke breaks on company time - if they want a fag they can wait until lunchtime, when its their time

Who would you hire?

And if you didnt hire someone just because they smoke then your no better than the PC brigade, which is quite ironic given the nature of this site.
I hate this PC driven agenda against smokers, yes we know its bad for your health, but the day these fuckers stop drinking their wine/beer/whisky is the day they can preach to me about health.

I personally don't give a stuff if someone smokes, I just don't want them doing it around me. Someone drinking alcohol in my presence will not affect my health and will not pollute the environment unlike smoking which does.
It is also a filthy and dirty pastime, leaving as it does, detritus and smell whenever it takes place. All you need do to confirm that is to stand at the doors of almost every NHS hospital and Health Centre in the land.
Every day when I was in practice, I had to listen to people moaning about being breathless and feeling ill. They all had things like COPD and emphysema which would have improved considerably by stopping smoking. The costs of treating them would make your eyes water. Some would be honest and say they that they simply cannot stop but most would tell me that they, "enjoy a smoke". These latter ones are liars, they are simply addicted to the nicotine hit and can't admit to themselves. The lie is given to their protestations by the astonishing amount of money they spend on the damn stuff.
I am sick to the back teeth of hearing, "smokers have rights too". NO they don't if in exercising that 'right' they infringe upon my right to breathe fresh air and not have my lungs assailed by toxic fumes. Anyone who smokes in the presence of children should be horse-whipped, they are being abusive.
I have heard smokers tell me that if I don't like smoking fumes, I should stay away from places where there are. What utter pish, it is simply impossible to go about daily life without coming across addicts hanging about outside buildings, filling the surrounding air with their filthy gases and littering the place with discarded dog-ends and ash.
Rod, don't tell me that if I gave you a magic pill that instantly let you stop smoking with no side effects you wouldn't take it.
And Donald Findlay's words on anything are worthless, he is a bigoted arsehole who is best ignored.

I gave up smoking about 8 years ago. Even though I stopped I still developed COPD a few years ago. Fortunately I stopped when I did. It doesn't stop me doing anything and I can still walk the few miles into Greenock if I pace myself. I get away with the occasional puff on my inhaler. But, it proves that only a few years of smoking has a big effect, so having to inhale third party smoke must do some damage.
At the end of the day, if it says 'No smoking' somewhere, and someone needs to smoke, do it where it is permitted.

I f they say they don't smoke and its later shown that they do, then their contract is terminated What they do outside of work is their business As for someone not smoking but who is a lazy git, then if they had been hired, they would then have their contract terminated too As I said in my game, I don't have to pay the slightest bit of attention to employment laws about how I terminate contracts, so if anything is discovered after they have started its easy peasy to dump them

It's nothing to do with being PC whatsoever, it's to do with not spending time smoking during working hours. I don't contract staff who cant work unsocial hours either, be that weekend working or evening working through the week That's another question I always ask is weekend availability - last thing I need is some god-botherer who cant work weekends
