Man but yer awfy strict sammy! You'd have done well in Her Majesty's Royal Navy!!!! It's not a case of being strict really, but being pragmatic. We 99% of the time operate to strict timescales, with most of the actual implementation work happening outside normal working hours - evenings and weekends. This evening & weekend work is always work until finished, we don't have time for people wandering off to church or whatever during migrations On ma last gig, we had one guy suplied to us by my customer, he was a seventh day adventist, this meant he was a no-show at weekends, wasn't allowed to work friday nights, unfortunately this meant others had to take up his slack, denying others of rota time off Unfortunately as he was the customers permie employee, they indulged him in that pish. the type of work i do has no time for passengers, it is quite intense and heavy going continuously when migrations are on - it is not 9 to 5, it cant be

I'm fine doing extra hours. Loved contracting as got a good standard rate and usually a good few double time weekends a month doing PC and Telephony role outs. As long as I know what extra hours I'm doing its never a problem.

I spent my entire working life working, 'extra hours' both in hospitals and the navy. The only harm it did me was that I killed every third patient (only kidding!)!

i have heard many elderly folks when talking about the war.." many a war has been fought with a woodbine"

As long as I know what extra hours I'm doing its never a problem. The good thing about "roll-outs" is that they can be planned to finish at a reasonably specific time a bit easier than migrations On my last gig, every weekend turned into a nightmare of extended hours As were moving servers and their services from one datacentre to another, shutting everything down (and backing them up) took an age But re-starting everything took even longer Worst example (started at 0730(friday) finished at 1700(saturday) 30 mins break to have a shower( only got that because I overstayed my welcome at hotel, took it when had to go back to pick up gear) Then drove home from Middlesborough (just as well teh car kew the way hame, as I was sound)

And if you didnt hire someone just because they smoke then your no better than the PC brigade, which is quite ironic given the nature of this site. I hate this PC driven agenda against smokers, yes we know its bad for your health, but the day these fuckers stop drinking their wine/beer/whisky is the day they can preach to me about health. It's nothing to do with being PC whatsoever, it's to do with not spending time smoking during working hours. I don't contract staff who cant work unsocial hours either, be that weekend working or evening working through the week That's another question I always ask is weekend availability - last thing I need is some god-botherer who cant work weekends less of the waffle and answer the question I think its a simple enough question!

It's not waffle, or can you explain how, at an interview, one could tell that someone would just sit about all day and the smoker won't Otherwise, at an interview I ask folk "Do you smoke?" If they say yes, then they don't get hired. If they no, then if everything else is OK they, if they are the best candidate will get hired. If its later discovered that they do smoke, then ah would terminate contract toot sweet If someone gets hired, a non-smoker and they turn oot tae be lazy, useless, cannae work extra hours or whitever, then their contract is terminated toot sweet too It's that easy, as I said employment law and discrimation law don't come into it, I don't need to worry about discriminating against any one for say religious reasons

employment law is there for a reason to protect the worker....thank god we have it smoke and mirrors Linda Employment Law is easily got round. In my line it ( and for that matter, anywhere can work like this)happens all the time and there's nothing that can be done about it whatsoever. If you don't like the cut of someones jib then they can be got rid of easily Had to do it many times, it's happened to me as well, but there's absolutely no comeback

Employment laws dont really give as much support to contract workers. Anyways, what's this got to do with smoking outside IRH! Who ruined my thread? Grrrr

Employment laws dont really give as much support to contract workers. Anyways, what's this got to do with smoking outside IRH! Who ruined my thread? Grrrr That's why I employ people this way. I contract the job out to a limited company, I'm subcontracting to a limited company, who they employ is up to them. As long as I get he work done when I require it. I will interview THEIR employees to decide on suitability, but I have no interest in employing them directly. When I "contract-in" staff, I expect them to work through a limited company, if hey don't, then they don't get hired either, although I would expect the agency to have filtered out all who didn't work thru a Ltd company

What you going to do when the IT skills shortage kicks in, tell the business you work for that you cannot fill vacancies cos you wont hire smokers? FFS get a grip, even the NHS dont have archaic rules like that. If you had to subbie to another company would you force those same rules on that company. PC bandwagon much? As for sacking someone cos they smoke, if it were me I'd take you all the way and bankrupt your ass PS noticed that you still havent answered the question, you want me to boil it down for you? OK You need to fill the role today, you've search highed and wide, your left with 2 candidates, both have references, the smoker has a great reference, the other's reference makes you doubt whether the/she is a grafter, the smoker has admitted they smoke, going by your replies you'd hire the lesser of the 2 candidates purely on the smoking issue. Bad business decision, why, because your putting your own preconceptions before the need of the business!

Bad business decision, why, because your putting your own preconceptions before the need of the business! As previously mentioned I wouldn't hire any of the two of them, I'm also rather dubious of believing references from anyone I don't know - references are 9/10 complete pish - reason being is that peopel tend to get sued for defamation for giving (especially in writing a bad reference) As for sacking someone for smoking, nothing they can do about it whatsoever - remember I don't hire the person - I "hire" their limited company - my contract will be legally with the company not the person. So if I fire them, I'm terminating teh contract with the Ltd company, not the person, hence no comeback whatsoever. And anyways is someone lies at an interview about not smoking, then it becomes apparent that they do, then they have lied and terminating the contract is a moot point. As mentuioned previously too, that's the upside of contracting in staff via their limited company, we don't legally terminate the person but teh Ltd company. As outlined above, i do subbie to other limited companies (I'm one myself) therefore I'm subbied to. One thing we don't have is a shortage of staff, findingh someone who disnae smoke and disnae want weekendsd aff to be a god botherer is relatively easy. Most people who do datacentre moves know that weekend working is de rigeur as that is when it is easiest to shut systems down, especially fri-night/sat/nighgt and all day Sunday - if you cannae work those days then you're nae much use in datacentres, about as much use as a chocolate fireguard in fact. We pay a lot of money to ensure we get the sort of people we need, if someone is daft enough to throw it away fur a fly fag then fuck them - thats sheer stupidity
