From the Tele:An independent taxi operator in Inverclyde? ? Aye right. I would put the licence fee up to £50,000 or even higher, at least then the community will get something back. Independent taxi operator.....oh fuck I have laughed myself sick at that one ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Actually this only effects the owner of taxis within the Inverclyde area and a lot of the taxis are owned independently and only lease the equipment for Inverclyde/ABC Taxis.
The guy pictured in the Telegraph the last I knew did work his cab independently of both these companies.
More importantly is how can the council justify a increase of at least £100 a year over what these guys are paying now for what surmounts to a bit of paper?
The taxi owners over the top of this pay for their plate each year and one test a year at £144 last I knew for what is basically a MOT if the car is less than 3 years old and twice a year if the car is over 3 years old. On top of that the insurance is about £1500 a year and after all this they are lucky to have about £250/£300 a week before tax for a 80 hour week.
So no wonder they are up in arms over this increase.

The only reason they let individuals, 'operate' their own taxis is because they can't have all the licences (at the moment) but let's not kid ourselves on, there are only TWO real taxi operators in Inverclyde, McCorleone and Ferris

At the end of the day this increase will hurt the hard working independent owner the most.
The local council just see the taxi owners as a cash cow.

Yes, it always boils down to the public, I'm absolutely certain the McCorleones will not lose out.

not just the taxi's fedup, the general public also Fin, it is one of the only departments at the council which makes huge profits each year and the % of the fees rise outweighs the % of the fares rise.

Yes, it always boils down to the public, I'm absolutely certain the McCorleones will not lose out. No they rake in a vast fortune each year from the Taxi trade within Inverclyde, Clydebank and Glasgow Airport each year. It's the owner operators which struggle to keep their cars on the road with mounting running costs each year with lots taking their cars off the road.
