I remember when you asked a builder to build something, they'd tell you how much and that was it. These day's it always goes up, especially if it's being built for a Government or local authority. The builders know they'll get away with it because it would be embarrassing if they down tools! Same thing happened with the Edinburgh tram, the big tent thing by the Thames, Holyrood etc.
Think I'll try the same tactic half way through painting someones bedroom and see where that gets me!

Being fair, Inverclyde like any other municipality, needs a civic venue for visiting performers and exhibitions. However, this banal project takes this requirement to extremes. Firstly, we have the existing property on Campbell Street which was effectively purpose built and despite all the mendacious fluff about it falling to be bits, it could continue to do the trick albeit with some sympathetic upgrading for many years to come.
Alas, the aspirant Thespians who swarm about the Arts Guild didn't feel they were being, 'served' by such a small and unworthy venue. There had to be somewhere large enough to house their enormous collective ego. We also had to have somewhere for the growing number of, 'local artists' who wanted to display there oft times, doubtful wares. The late Fyfe Robertson spoke of, "Phoney art, or Phart for short" and he would doubtless be moved to describe some of the forthcoming excrement in such terms.
Where do we come in amongst all this artistic fervour? Well the fact is, we don't. We just have to foot the bill both in the construction and outfitting of the building and the inevitable, endless repair costs that will ensue with such a badly designed and poorly located facility. We will no doubt be told that the exorbitant prices charged for entry to all the fun and games will be necessary to fund more productions, in other words, only those and such as those will be able to afford it. The Greenock Players or whatever they call themselves after all the recent blood-letting, will rule supreme. We'll have execrable performances of Chekov's lesser known works and occasionally laughable revivals of, 'The Steamie' played entirely in that hellish pseudo-Morningside accent, "Yes, but it is your own dirt Margaret".
We did of course have a superb civic theatre in the shape of the Cragburn but alas, the greed of some local councillors put paid to that place despite it having a high classification as a listed building. If only I could remember which councillor in particular was heavily involved. Well actually I do remember quite well but I have no intention of being sued but someone who is quite good at it.
Well, there's no going back and probably in the end, this fanciful edifice will cost even more. However, we can be consoled by the fact that HRH The Ponce Edward will be there in his wife's knickers to open the thing. Oh how the champagne will fizz and the canapés enliven the taste buds, it'll be such a jolly occasion. The poor bastards who have actually paid for it all will be pondering whether they can afford one of Morrison's £2 loaves.
The bottom line is, Inverclyde is NOT Drury Lane and the Greenock Players are NOT the Royal Shakespeare Company. I think St Lawrence's Club might suit them better.

a friend was on the waverly and took a picture of that new crappy building...my god it doesnt look any better apart from it being a very light green sort of colour....still looks like crap and will never change.....think of what could have been done with that money for the good of inverclyde rather than this over rated expensive piece of shit

Just a thought when the new Arts Centre is opened and they sell the Art's Guild who gets the money from that sale?

I would have thought Tiddles any sale of the Arts Guild should go towards funding the new build but it probably isn't.

Now I'm not sure about the situation today but I seem to recall that the building was leased to the thesps on a long term peppercorn basis by two old dears who are probably pan-breid now.
My mother reminds me that she used to be a member of the swimming club back in the days when it was the West End Baths. She get's frightfully toffee-nosed when she mentions it.
