I thought this was a happy wee tale, a change from the usual doom and gloom we all complain about.

It's Facebook shite Broxi and whilst I agree that we need the odd bit of whimsy, this kind of story seems to predominate in the Tele.

I agree that there is some whymsical content, but surely if the paper didn't provide that, it would be criticised for being full of bad news and doom and gloom, which I have read on here. Has there ever been any praise for a story or any of the reporters on here? I wouldn't know as I'm relatively new to the forum. I'm not a reader, but I respect any publication which is run in difficult times for the media and the economy in general.

Actually, as our name suggests, we were founded to provide a forum for those who wished to comment on Tele articles. We were forced into this action by the Tele's blatant bias in favour of the Labour Party and its blatant bias against the SNP.
The coverage of last year's election was astonishing and this was compounded by the downright lies handed down to us over the Tall Shits fiasco.
There has on occasion been a few plaudits offered to stories but it has to be accepted that the Tele really isn't a very good newspaper and it takes its dwindling readership for granted. They think that by increasing the number of, 'human interest' stories, more people will buy it, sadly for them, this is a forlorn wish.
At its height, online articles were attracting on average over a hundred comments and therefore the number of hits the site attracted has to have been phenomenal. The current editor in her otherworldly stupidity thought the way forward was to create a paywall where people had to pay to read most articles and comment upon them. Needless to say, takers for this, 'offer' have remained in single figures and from hundreds of lively comments they have gone down to none. In the fullness of time, the paywall will be torn down but whether the commenting will return is anybody's guess.
The Greenock Telegraph has become nothing more than a labour Party leaflet and to quote an ex-editor, a, '"comic". It is said that people only buy the rag for the Births, Deaths and Marriages but even that is dying out with the proliferation of Facebook and other networking sites. It would be sad if the Tele was to fail but then for most of us, it failed twenty years ago when real journalism died away. Oh and it would be better if Eric Baxter retired, his friendship with the Undertaker (a fellow street sprinter) has driven much of the pro-Labour stance the paper has taken.
Who knows, maybe Wallace Publications might come up with a replacement!!!!!

Well you obviously have your opinions of Mr Baxter but what of the rest of the paper and its reporters? Surely there is plenty within its pages of merit.

Well aside from dear Eric, most of the other, 'reporters' are fresh out of college and mainly write their stories at their desk rather than going out and actually taking a report.

Well you obviously have your opinions of Mr Baxter but what of the rest of the paper and its reporters? Surely there is plenty within its pages of merit. They are all pretty useless either by being crap or by management design They do not do investigative journalism, much really shown uop by teh story of teh coonsil and the fiasco over the grand money saving new model operating method that failed spectacularly. It was teh Glasgow Herald that brokke the story an dteh Tele caught up a few days later Their reporters opebnly admit they get most of their "big"stories about local things from the nationals How many stories do you see in teh Tele, our local paper about teh ineptness and poor managemengt at the council - none Notice how there are more stories about River Clyde Homes now that it is not under council control. It used to be one of the best local evening papers in the country, now it is just a joke

I've only ever seen the paper a few times when I visit my daughter, but I thought it provided a decent balance of local news, albeit some of it is a bit lightweight, but do we want misery and doom from a local paper? It seems to provide good coverage from the council, schools and the court stuff is well written and a good read. Their election stuff was spot on and I read a well researched and written piece on a sheriff retiring the other week, which didn't look like it was done from behind a desk. Surely the reporter must have had the agreeance of the sheriff, who I couldn't see agreeing to sit down and conduct an interview with a college kid?! My daughter has met quite a few of the staff out in the course of her employment and she says they are far from kids. Most are in the 30s and have worked at the paper for a number of years? I stand to be corrected, as you guys have more experience of the paper than me, but it seems to get a bit of unwarranted flak from what I can see. Can't comment on any political bias, not seen or read enough to know of that....!

Linda, Good luck with the Dam I passed it last night and it actually looked like the water level had risen again. The Two dams as you say are small nature reserves which deserve some sort of investment from the council.

The Darroch Park's (F*ck you IC, its not Gourock Park) state is diabolical, has been decimated over the last ten years, it wont be long before the Darroch "crypt" will be destroyed due to land subsidence, the council has done absolutely nothing. What has Ronnie Ahlfeid done about it I wonder? not much by the looks of it, oh forgot he follows his masters lead, the YAC are OK, Im alright Jack!

Its a big pile of keech mate, people that do buy it like my mother buy it just in case they miss anything in the obituaries etc. It really is no better and the tabloid rags IMHO, the human interest stuff really is dire and cringeworthy. They also avoid stories that give the council a bad name or criticise the council, when that happens its time to change the staff or close it down. I really wouldn't be surprised if its gone in 10 yrs, and it wouldnt be a great loss either!

The Greenock Telegraph had a proud and well earned reputation dating from 1857. It was owned for the most part by the Erskine-Orr family who tread a careful path and generally tried to keep an impartial, political policy. However, being ardent Progressive Liberals, their personal views sometime slipped through but by and large, the editors had a free hand.
The Erskine-Orrs died off and the paper changed hands first to Express newspapers and ultimately to the feckless mob we have now. They had a great editor in Ken Thomson, a no-nonsense kind of guy who tried to be fair to everyone and was always willing to listen to anyone even if they simply arrived at the Tele's door. Unfortunately, Ken retired and then began the slippery slide into New Labour new speak.
Around the mid to late 90s we saw big changes in the way the paper was put together. From being a folksy but newsy local rag it turned into a mini-Sun with garish, tabloid-like front pages. Some of the headlines were fictitious rubbish but they didn’t let the truth get in the way of a good story. Next we saw the rise in the, ‘Poor wee Rina-Shayla has had her Daimler Christmas present stolen from the back green and her distraught single mum, Portia-Lesleehee who saved all her social money to buy the car is calling the callous thieves, “evil”. A few days later, “Kind readers have given thousands to make sure wee Rina’s Christmas isn’t ruined”. Result for the Rina wan!!!! Even simple local news was given the tabloid spin and gradually, the Tele ceased to be a newspaper and became a comic.
The Liar Royal, Tony Bliar came into power and just as quickly, the Tele espoused and supported everything the Labour Party said and did. All opposition to Labour was roundly slapped down by mocking articles and the Tele was happy to print any lies the Labour council told them to. If you want confirmation of this, take a look at last year’s Tall Shits coverage. There is not ONE word of truth to be read about that fiasco and despite there being glaringly obvious fiscal mismanagement, no investigations have taken place. Labour and Riverside Inverclyde wouldn’t like it.
Their election coverage last year was nothing more than bile soaked invective against the SNP and fulsome, cringingly biased support of the Labour Party. The current editor is some woman from another dimension who destroyed a very valuable milch-cow in the shape of the web-based version of the Tele. It received thousands of hits daily and she could have easily convinced advertisers that there was a really good opportunity to have their ads seen by so many folks each day. However, the Labour Party were gravely concerned about the critical nature of the comments on the site about them and they moaned greatly to the Tele. We then saw Draconian censorship that resulted in any, even slight criticism of Labour being deleted. It was at this time, Jock and Linda Wallace decided enough was enough, they felt there had to be a free and open forum where people could have their say without the bony hand of Eric Baxter hovering over the delete button. I am pleased to say that our membership is substantial and even though many visitors do not comment, they do look at the board. We also KNOW that the Tele watches every day!
Now Broxi, by your own admission you do not live locally and you don’t read the Tele so how can you make an informed comment about the quality of the publication? The readership of the thing has dropped to an all time low except when some dolt or doltess tells us, “I’m walking to Alpha Centauri in memory of my sister-in-law’s dug that died of distemper and the running shits”. All the friends and family of these attention seeking morons dash out and buy up all the copies so that they can coo over them in front of their 1000” LCD tellies.
In short Broxi, the Tele is shite, it runs from sheer banality to vicious lies garnished by an unabashed Labour bias. Would I weep if it closed? No, it has outlived its usefulness. Bro Jeremy Burrows, a former Tele reporter himself runs a good online local newsletter but very few big stories emerge because he simply cannot afford a team of reporters and probably does it all from his bedroom. He does however give all sides a good say when the occasion arises. His only fault is that he tends to dwell too much on religious matters but that's up to him, it's his site after all.

The council do hee haw for this areas beauty spots and the state of some of them beggars belief.

Hmm..that's not what Ahlfield's publicity machine claims. Apparently he single-handedly saved Gourock/Darroch Park and arranged the, 'new' Gourock Pool which as I write has been delayed yet again from opening.

All I hear from those who praise him is that he, 'does a lot for youth'. I'd rather he stood up for Gourock and Inverclyde rather than his wee football team. I have found to be personally rather surly but then I don't really know him. I fear Gourock has always asked for what it got, there's too many little groups with self-interest.
The man, his name escapes me, who owned the wee electrical shop seemed to have lots of ideas and then he set up a dodgy trust with other dodgy people and it all ended in tears. The Tele had a field day!

this does a lot for youth shite, what they mean is he's involved with the YAC, and has been for over 20 yr, but thats where it ends. Theres hundreds of people all over Inverclyde who do a shit load more the Ronnie Ahlfield does.
