It is all very well and good making donations to help the, 'poor starving people in Africa (or wherever)', but I'm sorry, there are VERY many people in THIS country who need help.
India is a nuclear power and its huge industrial conglomerates own Jaguar-Land Rover, Corus Steel and Tetley Tea and that's the tip of the iceberg. Companies like Tata Industries do NOTHING for their own people yet they make huge profits year on year. I would give Pakistan sweet bugger all, it too is a nuclear power yet it fosters terrorism and the people hate us with a passion and the same can be said about that failed state, Bangladesh where their religion comes before food.
Africa is a festering cesspool that will never improve as long as tribalism and the proliferation of war lords continues. Many of the countries including Malawi have dreadful human rights issues. In many cases, gay people are if they are lucky, jailed for long periods and if they're unlucky, they are executed. In Nigeria, an oil-rich state, children are burned as witches with the approval of the State. Why should we contribute to countries like that? Then there is a widespread and very lucrative trade in aid by local big wigs. Instead of stuff going straight to those who need it, it goes to these thugs who sell it it to them.
South America is a vast continent consisting of the archetypal, 'banana republics'. Curiously, the west gives aid to Venezuela yet that country has vast oil wealth, it's not our problem is their government does nothing for the poor. The rest of the nations are rich in minerals and other things yet they never seem to be, 'out of the bit'. Again not our problem.
In this country, there should be NO poverty and everyone should have at least enough to eat and keep a home and have their health and educational needs attended to. However, EVERY BLOODY day I see elderly people and single unemployed and sick folk on the bread line because they have virtually nothing to live on. In winter, many of them have to choose between heat or food. These people fought wars and made sacrifices so that we can live today yet they are forced into penury by successive governments who don't give a stuff about pensioners or people who are sick and needy. ??). They have to go begging to some neb in the DWP for supplementary benefits and are subject to draconian means testing and they are made to feel like beggars. Big Society? Big load of shite!!!!!!
So no, sorry Christian Aid, it's a nice thought but there are too many poor and abandoned people in this country. Let's clear the shit from our own doorstep before we start doing the rest of the street.
