dont tell me he was an ambulance chaser Sounds like it to me - although more of a "Had a personal injury that was entirely your fault but you are willing to blame on others? Then phone me and we will sue the buggers..." Admittedly more of a mouthful than ambulance chaser but perhaps more accurate...

The sentences handed out by the courts in this country have a lot to do with the political correct brigade if it was me I would be handing out the maximum possible sentence in each case. This country is far to soft when it come to handing out punishments.

And where are you putting all the offenders? I am as hardline when it comes to sentencing as the next person, but you need to actually engage your brain and be practical. Would you be happy to pay another £100 a month in tax to keep them all while they serve these new lenghty sentences?

That's the main stumbling block as you say Broxi and building more prisons would be giving in. However, we saw recently the kind of shit they offer as, 'community service' which I would submit is nothing more than a day out for scum.
Community service orders should be VERY hard indeed and there has to be a strong element of punishment. Doing a job that wee boys and girls would normally do to gain a merit badge is hardly a chain gang.
The streets and pavements are covered in dog-shit and chewing gum, why not get them to clear that up? Also, make them wear a tabard that declares them to be on, 'Community Offender'. Let the people see that justice is being done and let them suffer a bit of humiliation. If their crimes involve violence make them do much longer spells of servitude. And PLEASE, can we stop the Tele from having them pose with smiling faces, it offends and annoys.
The prisons are full of people who have committed non-violent crime such as minor embezzlement, give these people hard Community Service with a tabard that says, 'Community Offender'. If we do this, there will be more room for violent thugs.

You talk a lot of sense. I think that most of the pictures used in newspapers are grabbed from websites or from outside of courts. I don't see the accused posing up with a glum face to appear next to a story about them being jailed do you? At least they are pictured and shamed as opposed to John Smith remaining anonymous and hiding behind his name! A picture never lies.

I actually know John Herald quite well and despite his bluff and severe manner he is a very kind hearted man..rather too kind-hearted (he'll curse me for saying that). I fear we need a, 'hanging judge' for a wee while at least.

Nope but I would have increase the amount of prisoners in each cell get rid of the playstations, xboxs, and flat screen tv's that would save money and make more use of the current prisons. After all it is not Butlin's they are going to prison to be punished. As for engaging my brain I have done this I just believe this country is too soft on many issues prison sentences being one.

Exactly Linda it is far to cushy in prison these days it is not a punishment anymore.
Lots of cons even got compo a few years back for having to slop out in the mornings.

And, J Irvine Smith, scourge of the scum. He is still going strong and when I spoke with him last year he had plenty to say about they way things are run these days.
