The law said that no Catholic priest or former Catholic priest could enter Parliament. As very few priests or former priests gave a shit, it never came up until Bliar for some inexplicable reason wanted Cairns for here. I have my own thoughts as to why he did it.

Regardless of Blair's reason, or Cairns for that matter, the Act of Settlement and laws of that ilk etc should have been axed years ago. Its a sham that in this country in this day and age that anyone of certain faith or creed be barred from standing to represent people.
All over a a battle that happened over 200 yrs ago

Greetings and Salutations to you all !
I regretfully won't be indulging in the shoot this year - what with 'my man' still absent without leave (last spotted in the back streets of Londinium trying to sell his body) I couldn't possibly show up with a 'hired hand' for the day could I ? Good Lord no - you just can't trust these commoners you know. They have no muscle - having been brought up on a diet of crispy pancakes (I believe they're called) and fizzy drinks. How on earth would they carry my spoils ??
Another reason for non-participation is that I'm currently convalescing after a mishap while trampolining naked from the waist down.....perhaps that is something to discuss another time however.
Might I finally just add that I'm jolly pleased to see Weejock has made a return. I look forward to reading your posts while I rest my weary body in the chesterfield armed with a dashingly good port washed down with an overly generous lump of Bavarian smoked cheddar.

Was there a problem with him standing because he was associated with the church? RC priests, ex or otherwise were not allowed to be an MP by law |

And no member of the Royal Family who is in line of succession may be a Catholic. Perhaps Harry will marry a muslim girl all wrapped up in full goonie and produce lots of little muslim kiddies. I can see it all now, King Said al Fatwa I. Notice I said Harry and not William because little Kate does not look at all well to me, she can't be any more than 7 stones.

Cairns the man entered the holy catholic church and trained as a priest and on being anointed into the church, decides he's gay and working for god cramps his style.
So he becomes a politician, gets elected MP moves to Westminister and champions the very things that his faith says is unholy.
To my mind the man is beyond contempt and not worthy of mention anymore.
