Don't want to disagree with you Tiddles but could the contract not being awarded to Ferguson's have something to do with them getting the Calmac contract for the Hybrid ferries and not being able to deliver Western's new vessels in the timescale they require?

I'm sure Ferguson's would have managed, there's plenty of room in that yard and there are many out of work shipworkers who would jump at a job. We are not talking about Queen Marys here, they are titchy wee ferries (rather too wee and titchy for my liking!)
Still, when Easdale takes over, there will be some interesting episodes.

Yeah if they take over all the ferries will be built as cheaply as possible probably in China or Poland

was told a about a conversation between 2 people in Helensburgh, where one said they hoped for independance and the local said they hoped not as they would lose faslane and Helensburgh would become a ghost town, hope to hell the easdale mob don't buy it for a marina.

Greetings and Salutations to you all !!
Probably worth noting Tiddles : 'there are many out of work shipworkers who would jump at a job'
I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I served my time in Scott Lithgow (under Trafalgar Houses Stewardship) - by the skin of my teeth. I was in the last ever intake of 'Technical Apprentices'.....in fact I had to complete my time up the river in John Brown Engineering as the Port Glasgow site was mothballed (save for skeleton staff maintained for on-going litigation). I'm in my 40's now (NO!! Not late 40's !!)....any unemployed shipworkers you speak of - ones of real 'hands on' experience and capability (albeit now covered in dust and cobwebs) would now be late 40's and 50's in age....and older still....
Hardly a deep pool of local expertise is it ? Assuming of course that this rich stream of 'shipyard workers' want to return to the industry ? Jump at the chance of a job ? I doubt it. As I recall, most of the platers / welders / sparks etc spent most of their time finding ways of not doing any work !! Long queues of guys waiting to use the toilets with newspapers under their arms (in preparation for the 20 min read ahead)...and finding makeshift beds in between the bulb bar stiffeners in double bottoms.....
Yep - the great Clydeside Shipyard Worker....nailed their own coffins firmly shut with their skiving and antiquated Unions....I know because I watched it first hand.
And I also tend to agree with Fedup above - the Ferguson yard doesn't have the building berth capability for additional 'titchy' boat building....
Anyway, it's close to Tiffin Time - must dash !
Toodle Pip !!

Currently Fergusons still have the "hover barge" taking up space, as the company they built it for went down the shitter
