www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk/news/greenock/articles/2012/04/27/427994-battle-begins-for-the-recruit-2012/I can't believe my eyes, in order to get some, 'year long job at £14,000 pa' teenagers are required to act like performing monkeys. UTTER, UTTER DESPICABLE SHITE!!!!! Make a f****** clown out of yourself for a shitty minimum wage short term (with NO employment protection) job that you can be fired from for no reason. Your mummy and daddy should take you aside and explain to you that lolloping about in rubber rafts and that sort of thing will NEVER get you a job. These kids need REAL jobs, not some condescending pap. Oh good, that will see you in good stead for a job in a call-centre or Tesco.

the first year this ran, the winner got a salary of £18000, wonder what happened to that, perhaps no one wanted to participate at that level?
or why pay someone a salary they are never going to get again?

and there's no guarantee that they'd keep such a, 'job' for the 12 months. They can and most likely would be fired as and when it suited.

To be honest Linda, I feel very, very despondent about things here, I simply cannot see it getting any better. I need to get away.

its too late for greenock as the rot has well and truly set in...the town has been destroyed under the name of modernisation and improvement....just look at the water front with that monstrosity that is being built next to that beautiful old building.... the town used to be a lovely place to live...okay it has its problems but that is nothing new...now there is no hope and you can see it in the faces of people as they walk past.... yea if we had a chance i think we would go too

My wife who refused to leave the area years ago and forced me to give up the navy and surgery now hates the sight of the place and can't wait to leave. My mother who loved Greenock now detests it and the boys see it as a desert rather like Mad Max (1 & 2).
Shame there are so many lovely, kind and decent people who have been forced into the background by bastard politicians and scum. I truly am weary and these last few weeks have convinced us all that it really is time to move whilst we still can. God help people who don't have that luxury.

when jocky and i were in australia we looked at emigrating to there.....it was so funny, they were looking for hairdressers but not for nurses....i found that really strange....the only bug in it was that we were too old to go on the package...... we cant really go anyway as our daughter is here and we wouldnt leave her..... i get so frustrated with this town as its so depressing

These days I wish I still had my motor cruiser. She was 32' and we kept her at Largs Marina but I never had time to play and the boys were too young. My dad loved the boat but never did a hands turn, he just sat in the saloon with a whisky in his hand telling me I was not much of a sailor!!!! Wife loved it, she got to dress like Sophia Loren with sunglasses and headscarf. Poor Commander Mug had to do it all.

Our boat would be quite primitive by today's standards but in the 80s she was quite the thing. We went all over the west coast in her and once even crossed the North Channel to Carrickfergus. We got a RADAR set and an early Decca and were quite well equipped. I of course, had a nice little drinks area. Great days.

Oh the navigator! My father used to say that I was a lazy sailor and I should do everything by dead-reckoning. I had a Philips record player!
