They need people to say how poor wee so and so has had an awful upbringing, whilst everyone else had the xbox he had to make do with an nintendo and that gave him an inferiority complex

They try to play the old, "oh it's not always children who have broken the law" routine but basically it's just another hidey hole for people who want to feel good about themselves.
