Linda,
I do not have access to the telegraph so cannot comment on the nature of the story. However, I can probably guess that they have went for the tabloid sensationalism that they often try to achieve but often fail in their attempt.
Greenock prison is a mixed sex jail at this moment in time, so firstly I would hazard a guess that this does not really apply to the male population in there. Secondly, I do not see a problem utilising whtever techniques they have for helping to show inmates that there are some things you can get legally that may help you feel good about yourself. It probably also helps to reduce potential violence and unrest in the jail and as such it is probably a welcome programme for both inmates and officers.
I have no details regarding the funding of this programme - could it be that student beauticians are taking advantage of a captive audience to practice their skills? What I would say that for every pound spent on this the Scottish Prison Service are probably saving in the long run with reduced security costs, reduced recidivism and more efficient and effective rehabilitation.
Being deprived of your liberty is the actual punishment but why not try different apporaches to see what works...

As inverclyde is awash wae hairdressers, beauty therapists and nail bars, getting clients in prison is probably the only untapped market left
