The Ardgowan was atrocious ,I was never so glad to see a building razed to the ground and all the horrible memories of it with it.

We took our kids out of the Ardgowan because it was appalling. At one stage we were told that our eldest son was a bit, 'slow' and needed extra tutoring. Strangely, when we put him in another school he excelled and is now a member of the Faculty of Advocates. At least one of the, 'favourites' features regularly in the Tele for various criminal acts.

I despise all bullies whether young or old. Schools and parents do not do enough to tackle the matter. There was a fair bit of it in the Academy but in fairness to old Crazy Bob Campbell (Beak), he came down on it like a ton of bricks but his evil predecessor, Chadwin actually encouraged it to, "make a man of you". My parents thankfully, did not share his views and my Dad in particular set him straight when I was the victim of someone's twisted, probably sexual frustration.
It was rife in the navy between senior ratings and juniors but whenever I came across it, I came down like a hammer on the perpetrators.

i was bullied in primary and secondary by the same girls and to be honest it coloured my life...when our daughter went to school for the first time i was uptight the whole time and even in secondary it was the same......she was okay but i wasnt...........all because the school did nothing to prevent it happening to me.....a few years ago i was in contact with one of the boys i was in primary with and we were talking and i told him about it, i nearly died when he said why didnt i tell him he would have sorted it for me............i wish i new that years ago instead of being silent

I absolutely hated school and have NO good memories of it at all. The lessons never bothered me but all that jolly hockey sticks pish that the Academy went in for made me cringe. It was all very English and we were to be keen on rugger (never rugby..that sounded too common), hockey and of course bloody cricket.
There were legions of aspiring west end arseholes pretending they were at Eton and bus loads of well to do morons who couldn't count too buses but doing awfully well.
Old Bob Campbell was quite mad but at least he tried to get the place on an even keel after Chadwin was gone. However, as my mother always says when I talk disparagingly about the place, "you at least learned to speak nicely".

One thing about the academy Tidds was the females in their Hockey attire, I was at the school in 75 giving a talk on the advantages of being a jnr soldier when it came to getting promotion as well as a commission, once you had reached the age for adult service.
Although setup by the school, I had this feeling of being looked down on (By the staff member sent to look after us) as I was a mere A/T and the person with me was a Sgt. However the young lassies in their Hockey skirts were all over us. Much to the dislike of the staff. After that morning the Army as far as I know, was never invited back.
The other schools we went to made us most welcome and on going back to St Columba I was invited to the staff room for tea and biccies.
