That helped didn't it? And who was in power then?
A MAJOR initiative aimed at helping the crisis-hit electronics industry will be launched within days. Scottish Enterprise Renfrewshire, the Scottish Executive and Electronics Scotland ? the leading body in the industry? will be offering support to firms wanting to diversify into new products and markets. The move comes in the wake of 1,880 job losses announced in Inverclyde since December. Experts from Scottish Enterprise Renfrewshire also plan to meet with bosses at FCI in Port Glasgow which announced on Thursday that it plans to close with the loss of 180 jobs. A spokesman for the enterprise company today expressed disappointment at the plan to shut the Port Glasgow factory. He said: ?Our most immediate concern is to ensure that everything possible is done to assist those employees who may be affected by FCI?s announcement. ?Legally, all parties must now await the completion of the statutory 90-day consultation period and we have noted FCI?s commitment to seek alternatives to complete closure and to make its best endeavours to develop mechanisms to support affected employees back into work.? The spokesman added steps had already been made to approach the company with an official offer of support and to explore the opportunities for maximising employment. He added: ?This is likely to involve the Scottish Executive?s PACE framework (Partnership Action for Continuing Employment), a network of local public agencies set up to help those who lose their jobs through redundancy back into employment.?
