If you can't read the whole story, worry not, just make it up like the Tele does
Oh far be it from me to rejoice at the loss of 12 jobs in Inverclyde, to lose your job in that area is tantamount to a sentence of long term unemployment. However, I do not regret the end of Comet, it was a despicable company that demonstrated a total lack of customer care. It simply ignored the Sale/Supply of Goods Acts and you were effectively told to go away if you had a problem with their shoddy goods.
Some years ago, I was persuaded to buy a large (for the time) LCD television. Whenh we got it home it didn't work so within half an hour, we trudged back to the shop at the Waterfront for a replacement or refund as we are entitled to under law. "No", said the fat woman on the desk, "We'll have to send an engineer out to check it over". I advised her that she was in breach of the law and that I wanted a refund immediately. She refused and we left with the TV (I didn't want to leave it with them lest they nicked it). We drove to the Trading Standards Office in West Stewart Street but it had ceased to operate so we sought the advice of our son who was about to graduate in Law.
He drew up the papers which we submitted to Small Claims Court Hearing and within minutes, the Sheriff found in our favour and ordered an immediate refund with an award of costs against Comet and a compensatory payment to us of £200.00. Comet didn't defend the action and it took the threat of a more serious referral to a higher court before they paid out. They were also ordered to collect the TV from our home and despite dozens of phone calls and recorded delivery letters, they never did, so we kept it as the law allows and had it repaired by Davidson Brothers at Regent Street (it was an internal fuse!). It now sits in our conservatory!
It seems we were not alone in falling foul of Comet's cavalier attitude to its customers, in the past 5 years, Comet have had more than 5000 successful actions against them for breaches of the consumer legislation.
So, sorrow for poor wee ordinary workers yes but NO sympathy for the fat witch at Greenock and NO sympathy for the company and its asset stripping scum owners.......venture capitalists = vermin!

A TOTAL of 12 jobs are at risk at the Greenock branch of trouble-hit electrical firm Comet.
