well I hope they did have a long talk with pupils, because making big changes as to how pupils have been working for years, does nothing to help their confidence.
I remember how I felt when being Taken from The Highlander's academy and put into the dreaded Ardgowan school with the draconian Mr Miller, all due to a school that went on fire and pupils were hastely shifted around. Not only did it put the fear of death into us all as we tried to change our ways of working, and on our qualifying year ,but also having to put up with a snobby lot of teachers who thought Bow Rd weans were well beneath them.
Still look back at that 7 months as hell and believe me, I soon got a education on how to survive.
So on that note my thoughts go to all those who have to change to suit the so called educators

the only time i had time off school was when you were getting injections....all they needed to do is let me smell that stuff they used to clean your arm with and i would flake out.....i remember getting taken home and the teacher saying how worried she was about me.....if only they realised....other than that i never missed a day in school

Yes and in those days they didn't have disposable needles and the sharpness of the old ones left a lot to be desired. The sugar lumps were ok though

I remember being 10 and my sister being ever so nice gave most of the family Dysentary, I was so ill, reason being , I had a wee sister and brother who were so afraid of going into hospital so me the big brave sister was taking my sample tube and putting a sample of my brothers poo in the tube, results were, same as him but the reality was I was a very sick lassie and nearly died. Spent weeks in the old gateside and when I got back to school after about 2 months later ,I was like a stick insect.
My teacher at the time was a Miss Lee and I must have had a pure goth look, but she gave me a real hard time of it as I kept falling asleep in the class. Dysentry then in the very early 60s was not good, I still carry the effects of it and the memory of Miss Lee.......................mind you I was told she died in the class of a heart attack, but come to think of it , she never lost her temper but she had a look of pure hate when someone did something wrong.
Imagine remembering that after 50 years, aye some teachers should never be.

we had a good headmaster who insisted that the brave ones went first to show the others it was ok and any wean that got the jag got the sweetie ( dolly mixture ) that put the smiles on their faces.
Is'nt it wonderful when a bad experience can be made not only a good experience but a adventure and all it takes is patience with a smile. Mr McGregor ( headmaster ) would walk up and down the line, telling us all that we will go into see the nurse as babies and come out as big boys and girls, remember thinking it hurts to be big, 5 mins later out in the playground playing beds.
Remember the playground games, beds, french ropes. hula hoops rounders. peevers etc and all the songs that went with them.

kick the can and bing bang skoosh, grabbing your mams metal tray and sliding down the concrete stairs teeth rattling. Pinching your dads hobnail boots and sliding down the hill making sparks with the segs on the soles, going out with your mates on roller skates and sharing them by giving them a skate and a book to sit on top of the skate to shield your bum as you went tearing down the big hills.
Bread and butter sarnies with a bottle to walk up the hill to the ( horses tail ) and filling the bottle with lovely cold clear water......................how come I always remember the sun shining.
