www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/number-addicts-caught-methadone-scotlands-1771261Pish, very few pharmacists would be so stupid as to allow a junkie to take their meth away. No, this is down to crooked doctors and wholesale drug distributors. There are very few little back street, independent chemist shops these days and the big chains have very tight stock control and monitoring. It's time this ridiculous programme was ended, it doesn't work at all and it costs a fortune to administer. The notion of replacing one opiate for another is preposterous. Oh and aren't prisoners on drug related charges searched before they are put in the cells?

I wont go into detail but, a friend of mine's son was on Methadone and received it weekly in Edinburgh. My friends son was in great pain and his doctor and social worker said he had mental issue's, eventually he took all of his Methadone and died. On the report of his autopsy he had cancer of his kidneys, blocked valves in his heart and had maybe 3 months to live, the sad part was nobody believed he was in pain. My friend has tried to get the law changed in Edinburgh but to no avail.
It is time that the program was ended Tidds, for one it is expensive and 2 it covers a multitude of sins.

I agree Horn, whilst I have little time for junkies, we have a duty to take care of ALL our patients. It is obvious from your posting that this lad's, 'health care professionals' treated him as expendable.
Methadone is actually dirt cheap as a drug but it's the whole tier of administration its use creates that costs the money. The idea began in America in the late sixties/early seventies but it became obvious very quickly that it was totally useless as a therapy. Just why when we knew all that did we start it here?

I wonder about the accuracy of the figures - 3500 is equal to 70 a week or 14 per day. Is it just me or does this seem really high...(no pun intended)

You have a point James, we should not go down the path of believing the word of the Daily Wreckord or HM Courts Service

Well, to be honest, I would only prescribe if I was pushed to it. It causes really severe respiratory depression, nausea and urinary retention. It was quite popular in the 60s and 70s under the tradename, Physeptone.

Number one son told me previously that he used to fill a prescription for someone who was given it for severe back pain, that was when he was a student and worked in a pharmacy in greenock town centre He was stunned as in that pharmacy they only handed out methadone to junkies and the morning after pill to daft wee lassies

I think I might know the very doctor who prescribed it.... In he same shop, when he went back as a locum pharmacist was one lassie who got 5ml of methadone per week ( it think - it was a minicsule amount) She had been weened right down ( one of those rare cases were methadone treatment actually worked the way it was supposed to) but felt psycholigically unable to take that final step - she didnt need it but.....
