INVERCLYDE Royal Hospital and Ravenscraig Hospital are not clean enough, according to a new report. The Greenock hospitals were not up to the required standard when they were inspected between March and May 2002, say watchdog Audit Scotland. Four wards in each were checked. Reviewers checked floors, walls, beds and lockers, screens and wash basins in wards and public areas. The inspectors found that the IRH had no problems with absences or staff turnover but failed to achieve acceptable levels of cleanliness. The audit body"s report involved spot checks at 74 hospitals. A total of 21 hospitals were named as giving cause for concern, including the two Greenock hospitals. Auditor General for Scotland Robert Black said: 'One in five hospitals show a clear need for improvement. 'Patients rightly expect to be treated in clean hospitals and this is a priority for the health department. 'It is important that the concerns raised in the report are addressed at the highest levels in trusts.' Audit Scotland recommends ongoing reviews of cleanliness at hospitals, which have agreed actions to address problems. No one was available to comment from either hospital as we went to press.
